Who we are
Anglo American is one of the world's largest mining companies. With 70,500 permanent employees and 21,000 contractors in South Africa, we are the country's largest private sector employer. As a major business player in South Africa, we aim to make a real and lasting contribution to the development of the country and its people.
What we do
Three of Anglo American’s mining businesses are based in South Africa: Platinum, Kumba Iron Ore and Thermal Coal.
We hold advantageous positions in the most structurally attractive commodities, and have taken steps to concentrate on our core mining portfolio. This has involved a series of divestments, including the demerger of the Mondi Group and the sale of our shareholdings in AngloGold Ashanti, Highveld Steel and Vanadium, Namakwa Sands, Tongaat Hulett and Hulamin.
Other southern African assets identified for divestment are Scaw South Africa and our Gamsberg, Black Mountain and Skorpion mines.
Our approach
Anglo American-controlled companies account for 15% of the value of businesses listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and since 1999, we have invested more than R143 billion in local capital projects. A further R51.7 billion is earmarked for our future capital investment pipeline, underlining our commitment to our roots and our firm belief in South Africa's future.
We play an important role in the country’s economy, and our activities account for about 4% of the total gross domestic product.
Our employees
Our employees remain our most valuable asset and as the largest private sector employer in South Africa we are responsible for a workforce of more than 70,500 full-time employees and 21,000 contractors. Our management structure reflects the diversity of our nation; 46% of junior and senior managers are historically disadvantaged South Africans while 13% of all positions are held by women.
The health and safety of our people is of paramount importance and we have adopted a 'zero harm' mindset through the application of simple, non-negotiable safety standards. We are also active in the fight against HIV/AIDS and, through the Business Call to Action initiative, have committed to creating 25 000 new jobs in our communities over the next seven years.
